But that may not solve the purpose in the long run. Vacuum cleaners are designed to clean using the principle of vacuum operation, i.e., low volume of air traveling at high velocity whereas, an extractor basically works on high volumes of air at a lower velocity. Extractors are meant to handle large quantities of continuously-produced dust while at the same time, their hose of larger diameter helps in ensuring that there is no blockage anytime.
For instance, a 1 HP extractor can help with at least 600 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air flow. Larger milling machines may need higher ratings and therefore, one can see that vacuum cleaner may not serve the purpose and a dust extractor is needed for the job.
- Give a thought on the flexible hose – Most types of woodworking machinery comes with a 4-inches or 5-inches diameter extraction hose. They should be connected properly with the dust extractor so that extraction is proper at all times. It is also important that the positioning of the dust collection system is correct so that it can help in gathering all the dust that comes to it. At times, people try to position them at considerable distances and that might spell trouble as the needed extraction may not be there.
Hence, it is important to ensure that the flexible hose is positioned correctly, as mentioned by an OEM. Larger extraction systems usually employ more power so that at the business end, there is considerable strength to suck in the dust and a higher value of CFM can be achieved.
- The safety of the machine itself – There is always a hazard of building up of static charge inside a dust extractor. The dry timber pieces inside the hose continuously rub and create static charge within it. If it makes a spark, then it is only one of the three active ingredients that are needed for a fire mishap! The other two are the fuel in the form of dust particles and air which is there in large quantities in the system.
Therefore, it is very important that the system is grounded satisfactorily. The inside of the hose should be grounded along with the machine and the extractor so that any static formation can be eliminated from the system.
