| So, you may have seen the term thrown around a bit, but what does Officially Licensed Merchandise really mean? First, let's explain why we at Planet 13 get our undies-in-a-wad about only carrying Official & Licensed Merch! When we say Our Music. Our Life, we mean it. Planet 13 is fully owned & operated by musicians & 'lifers' of the music scene, so we personally know how important it is for bands & artists to get the credit they deserve for their work. |
| So, here's where the Licensed and Official bits come into play. When a band or artist creates something, like a song or piece of artwork, they have to protect it from bootleggers by placing copyrights onto their creative piece. Once their protection is in place, they then "License" out the right to use a specific song or artwork to certain businesses to reproduce (eg. song in a movie or image on a t-shirt). Then the newly "Licensed" business can produce that band or artists' song/artwork as per their License Agreement and sell it to eagerly awaiting fans! It's also likely that the "Licensed" business will have to pay royalties back to the band/artist on each item sold; depending on what the License Agreement states. So you can see, it's a bit involved to be legit, but it's the only way to ensure bands and artists get the money they deserve so they can continue creating for their fans! |
|
| Of course, Licensing and Royalties all cost money. Enter...The Bootlegger. Bootleggers are people or businesses who copy a band/artists' song and/or artwork without a license to do so. They will then reproduce the song/item themselves (usually at a lower cost because they haven't had to pay any Licensing Fees or Royalties), without telling the band/artist or the business that owns the License. So, what happens? That Bootlegger gets all the money from all the sales they make, and nothing goes back to the band or artist. That means the more you support a Bootlegger, the less you support your band/artist. The less support a band/artists gets, the more likely they won't be able to continue doing what their fans want them to do, and that's creating amazing music and artwork. So buy only 100% Officially Licensed merchandise, because the alternative isn't worth the few bucks you think you'll be saving. After all that, what's Planet 13 all about then? We're about supporting our music and our scene by providing you with only 100% Officially Licensed merchandise! Our Music. Our Life. |
